Network based timing servers and systems are exposed to an increasing multitude of security threat vectors. This paper examines the “Security Perimeter” of network based time servers used in large enterprise, data center and finance industries. The Cybersecurity reporting system for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) will be covered as a key source of security alerts and targeted mitigation. Additional security aspects such as Payment Card Industry - Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) compliance will be discussed with focus on its related timing security requirements driving the worldwide banking industry
