Solving 5G Performance Synchronization Challenges
- Jeff Gao - Director of Product Marketing, SiTime
5G networks impose extremely stringent time synchronization requirements particularly for outdoor equipment such as the remote radio head (RRH). These IEEE 1588/PTP systems depend on the performance of the local precision oscillator for clock recovery and time holdover. This presentation will cover various IEEE 1588 implementations and using the following types of oscillators to assess the impact of the local oscillator ΔF/ΔT on the accuracy of the IEEE 1588 system for 5G applications.
- ±100 ppb precision TCXO with 2.5 ppb/C ΔF/ΔT
- ±50 ppb TCXO with 20 ppb/C ΔF/ΔT
- ±10 ppb OCXO with 5 to 10 ppb/C ΔF/ΔT
- ±5 ppb Stratum 3E OCXO with 0.8 ppb/C ΔF/ΔT
Test results will compare PTP time and phase accuracy, particularly under environmental stressors such as air flow and rapid temperature change. You will learn how to solve 5G performance synchronization challenges due to temperature, airflow, and other environmental stressors.
Network technology is constantly evolving. This session will explore the evolution path towards these new networks and the related implications in terms of synchronization needs.
Topics for discussion include:
- The path to 5G, is it evolution or revolution? What’s in the standards?
- What services and technologies will be enabled by new mobile networks?
- What are the performance and in particular the synchronization requirements of mobile technologies such as 5G’s “New Radio.”
- What is the network architecture? How will this be affected by technologies such as SDN and NFV?
- What are the challenges introduced by the fragmentation of the access network into fronthaul, middlehaul and backhaul?
